Thanks for sharing this story; I am sure that more than a few people can relate to it in this economy. We expected to be in better financial shape at this point in our lives but circumstances have provided unexpected "opportunity" to learn to be grateful for what we do have. Life may not bring exactly what you expect, but it is good!

Paul,

First of all, I'm awfully sorry about my english :( I just want to let you know that we've published an iphone app which is absolutely free. We are thinking about doing a Mac OS app too, also free. Do you think it could be useful? We use iCloud to save personal gratitudes in order to change your phone or tablet or mac and not losing all your entries...

I started my gratitude diary once my second daughter was born. I start to feel better and a couple of months later I decided to create this app. People is really appreciating it, It makes me feel good. I hope you try it, it could be great if you can provide your opinion... thanks! http://goo.gl/SOgQL

I'm in too! I agree with Debby - it works best for me at the end of the day. I'm sure it doesn't matter what time you do it, it's just important that you schedule the time and stick to it. Little by little we change ourselves and at the same time, the world.

Paul--- I'm in! The really odd thing was that JUST THIS MORNING, as I was meditating/reading, I was thinking about this very thing.... and I do call it my "Hour of Power" as well. So, count me in the tribe!

I am grateful that the past few nights I can see the crescent moon with its' beautiful white glow against the dark night sky. It makes me think of how wonderful our God is that gives us such pleasures. I know He put it there for more than that reason but I know for sure being who He is, that giving me this joy, was one of them.

This was just a wow story. Thank you very much for sharing. Yes, this is our sad reality. That's probably why the older generations had more fun in their time. Life has become too fast for us and we can't seem to know how to pause even to listen to a talented musician.

I grew up in Seattle in a house that had a million dollar view. Every morning for more than 18 years I would awaken to an ever-changing view of the Puget Sound, and the Olympic Mountains (at least when they weren't totally obscured by the clouds!)

I enjoyed and appreciated that view, and on those days when the fog was thick and obscured it from my gaze, I missed it.

But even on those foggy days there was an opportunity for appreciation - my gaze shifted from the grandeur of the overall beauty in front of me to the closer ghostlike outlines of the trees in the foreground and the plants in the yard. Those were the days that reminded me that even when grandeur of the overall view was unavailable to me, by looking closer beauty could still readily be found.

How many times in our lives have we found the "fog obscuring our view" and missed the opportunity to see a different type of beauty right there in front of us?

Thanks for sharing this post, Paul. It's a great reminder (to use an old cliche) to "stop and smell the roses."

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. I am so grateful for your daily gratitude bursts! They seem to come when I am dealing with just the thing you are talking about, or I am dealing with someone who is dealing with just what you are talking about.
I love how God works.
Thank you for being a light in the world.

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

I especially liked how you reminded us to review it everyday. It doesn't help if it is just in your notebooks. It needs to be in the forefront of your mind!

This is beautiful.
I agree with Brad that the simple but powerful explanation of "Oh My God!" is inspiring. I will be looking forward to seeing more from Louie Schwartzberg's Happiness Revealed project.
Thank-you for sharing. Be blessed in the new year.

Love the message in this video, Paul, and how everything comes around full circle to the construction worker/city worker who got the (gratitude) ball rolling. :)

Even though these little acts of kindness were staged, the value in the message remains ...

We CAN make a difference in someone's life and, hence, a difference in the world!

Happy Holidays! (and don't go too heavy on the eggnog) LOL

I am thankful for the inspiration that I felt one Saturday morning in April of this year to write a blog each day. Two days later I began writing one to two hours EVERY DAY about what I am thankful for at goodmorninggratitude.com. It has been 220 days in a row now. Focusing on gratitude for an average of ten hours per week has profoundly changed my life!

I am getting the bursts and enjoying them very much! I have 2 chronic diseases and pain most days with low energy. My sponsor thru a 12-step program recommended this site to me to help keep me positive and grateful! Thank you so much for that! I appreciate the positive energy you put in my life!

I think you could write a whole post for each of these tips, Paul! They're really useful.

I'd also add my own experience that comparing how you feel at the end of a productive day vs. the end of a procrastinating day is an excellent motivator. When I've put my heart into my writing and also completed most of my to-do list, I feel completely ready to relax and enjoy my family at night.

Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Paul
I thought you might appreciate getting some input from a faithful reader of your daily "ällaboutgratitute" column.

There is nothing worse then Unexpressed Gratitude. The whole reason for saying thank you is to let the giver know how much you appreciate something he or she has done for you. As the author G.B. Stern said "Silent Gratitude is not much use to anyone"

Not expressing your gratitude is like gift wrapping a present and then not giving it to anyone. Especially as we celebrate Thanksgiving this week let us reflect on how much we have to be thankful for and make an special effort to always express our gratitude.

Thank you Paul for spreading the word.

Reading is a very underestimated tool for propelling you forward - I agree, Carmen! You can learn from the experiences of others simply by reading! Of course, you need to read, implement, and absorb what you did in order to truly experience and learn from it, but it certainly gives you a great head start!

Today my husband and I had the pleasure of meeting a couple who visited our congregation and took them to lunch. It was wonderful getting to know them, learning about their mid-west background, and their experiences in Florida, as well as the number of things we have in common. This was a wonderful learning experience!

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your post. I saw Nick speak at a church conference a few years ago, and it was amazing how much energy and enthusiasm he had as he spoke. It felt like he was going to bounce off the stage with all his energy and enthusiasm. My mom, who because of her strokes, uses a wheelchair or a walker to get around, was also there, and cried while hearing him speak. He reminded her that inspite of whatever limitations we might each have, we still have amazing possibilities available to each of us. We all have more than we know, we just have to believe it and use it.

Thanks again for sharing! And thanks for being an awesome Wordpress coach and teacher!

Sincerely,

Sandra

Thanks for sharing this video, they are a great group which I will now definitely follow.
Today's quote (Thursday) is a challenge for you, dear Paul, since your daily habits today are very different than they were last week. How are you adjusting...how about all those books on your staircase you tell us about....maybe a good time to read, re-read, or recycle! Love you and glad you are beginning to feel like your old self....which one will we see on Thanksgiving???? One of the biggest gratitude holidays

This is a great perspective on money. Be responsible but go with the flow.

I also want to thank you for today's Gratitude Burst:

Hello Paul:)
Thank you so much for your daily gratitude quotes - I do enjoy them! I suppose even though I've gone through some rough times, I have the tendency to look at the glass half full instead of half empty:) I am so thankful that God was merciful to me, years ago spared my life from a fire and a year later saved my soul. It is good to be alive, have family and friends and a God who takes of us :) Heidi

Gratitude is such a refreshing subject. The Bible teaches to be grateful for everything. An attitude of thanksgiving breaks the yolk of ingratitude.

I so admire Steve Jobs and all he did. Even though, I'm REALLY late to the party...just got my first iPod. But I must say, I'm nearly addicted to it. So sorry his life was cut short.

Paul, I remember your burst of today (October 1) all too well. Tomorrow would have been my dear sister Francine's 70th birthday. I celebrate our time together every day and as time passes I am so grateful I had such a wonderful sister who became my wonderful friend. You were fortunate to have such a special mother in law who loved you dearly for your giant heart and I know you returned that love to her.

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what
we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into
acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can
turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger
into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings
peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."

Thanks for the suggestions! I was in Pittsburgh once a few years ago. Maybe it is time for a road trip!

Thanks, Alicia, for reminding me of the relevancy as well as the therapeutic aspects. I never thought of it that way... I think I will share some calming art work in the future! Thanks for the suggestion! :-)

Great suggestion, Melissa (phrased as a question ;-) ) It is actually easy to help others, we are just to 'busy' to pause and open the door for someone, help them with their groceries, donate blood, or even shovel a driveway that is full of snow.

I learned a while ago that it is not, "all about me." I will never accomplish all that I want by myself. I have to reach out to others. The best way to start is by being kind.

Thanks for stopping by!
